A lot to be thankful for
As another Thanksgiving day comes up I am reminded to be thankful every day for family, friends, freedom and community. I live and work in a city where I can leave my car at home, not worry about parking and take care of many of lifes details and daily shopping without leaving town. When I hear comments about Main Street River Falls with too many vacant buildings, I ask if they shop at Walmart and other stores outside town when they might be able to get the same product here. Granted, many of our stores are independent and locally owned and lack the buying and discounting power of national chains, but most make up for it in service. I encourage people to shop locally whenever possible to support Main Street. It’s your choice.
Thinking about health care costs
I spend too much time thinking about what I spend on health care and insurance and have e-mailed many elected officials to ask about the cost and scope of their health insurance. The response has been surprising. Rep. Sheila Harsdorf said that she didn’t know and only Sen. Russ Feingold told me that he pays $200 a month for an HMO and that the cost would go up if he left office. Hmmm. That seems like a great deal to me. I wonder what the taxpayer portion of a lifetime health benefit is? Are others concerned about this? Why don’t we get the same benefits that they do? If we can’t afford it, why don’t we change it?
